# Can an AI agent pay with x402 or MPP?

Mostly. 5 of the 9 products that offer x402 or MPP took a real payment from our agent. At fewer than 5 others, our agent paid but the seller's side never completed the payment.

## What an agent needs to pay you

- An unpaid call answers 402 with a payment challenge.
- The challenge names the price, the network and the asset.
- The paid call returns its result in the same request.
- No account, key or card is needed before the first paid call.
- The docs name every endpoint that takes payment.

## What we found

- 4 of the 5 payments bought the product itself. 1 bought single calls to part of it.
- All 5 payments settled on a live network with real money, not a test network.
- All 9 products offer x402. Fewer than 5 also offer MPP, too few to report on their own.
- 35 of the 201 offer a way for an agent to pay on its own, x402 and MPP included.

## For agent builders

- Check that the payment settled before you count the call as bought. At 1 of 9, it didn't.
- Set a cap per payment and per day before your agent pays anyone.
- Read the price in the 402 challenge before you pay.

## How we tested

- Drives from 1 Oct 2026 to 1 Nov 2026, 201 products.
- At 9 of them, the drive found x402 or MPP offered as a way for an agent to pay.
- Where it could, our agent made one small real payment and checked what came back.
- A payment counts when it settled and the product delivered what it was paid for.

## Limits

- Each product as it was on the day of its newest drive.
- Payments were small: one call or a little prepaid credit.
