# Appwrite L1 · Needs a person

Appwrite is a backend service for apps.

**Can an AI agent use Appwrite? No, its robots.txt says no.** Appwrite's robots.txt disallows AI agents on sign-up, so our agent didn't sign up on its own.

Category: Databases · Connects by: MCP, API, CLI, SDK · Agent payments: None found · Driven: 27 Oct 2026

**How to connect**
- MCP server URL: `https://mcp.appwrite.io/mcp` (streamable HTTP, documented). Source: https://mcp.appwrite.io/mcp
- API base URL: `https://cloud.appwrite.io/v1` (documented). Source: https://appwrite.io/openapi.json
- CLI install: `npm install -g appwrite-cli` (documented). Source: https://appwrite.io/docs/tooling/command-line/installation
- Docs page: `https://appwrite.io/docs` (tested in our drive). Source: https://appwrite.io/docs

**Level 1: Needs a person.** Agents can't get in on their own.
- Got in by: A person sets it up (Not on its own in its drive)
- Got as far as: Sign up (Use, Pay and Leave not reached)
- To reach L2: Let an agent sign up on its own.

## From finding it to leaving

What an agent managed without a person, at each step.

1. **Find**: On its own. Docs it can act on: llms.txt, an OpenAPI and an MCP server. 588 doc pages read.
2. **Get in**: Stopped. Can't sign up. Robots.txt closes sign-up and sign-in to AI agents; no sign-up API. Stopped here.
3. **Use**: Not reached. Tasks need an account.
4. **Pay**: Not reached. Buying needs an account.
5. **Leave**: On its own. Nothing to cancel, deletes its account.

## Getting in

None of the 3 ways in got our agent in on its own; one got partway.

Where it stopped: **CLI code login**. Robots.txt closes sign-up and sign-in to AI agents; no sign-up API.

- Both kinds of agent (On a server, or in its own browser): No. Stops at sign-up: its robots.txt disallows AI agents there.
- Signed agent (Known to Cloudflare): Yes. The sign-up page opens.

| Way in | What happened |
|---|---|
| Runs locally, no account | Partway |
| CLI code login | Stopped: The consent page needs an account |
| A key from a person | Not tried: Needs a person's account |

- Crawlers: **robots.txt disallows AI agents on sign-up.** To let agents sign up, remove the rule that names them.

## What an agent can do with Appwrite

No task was tried: our agent couldn't get into Appwrite.

Core tasks Appwrite offers an agent:

- Create a table or collection (API, MCP, CLI)
- Create or update a row/document (API, MCP, CLI)
- Query rows with filters (API, MCP, CLI)
- Deploy a serverless function (API, MCP, CLI)
- Authenticate an app's end users (email, OAuth, OTP) (API, MCP, CLI)
- Upload a file (API, MCP, CLI)
- Create a storage bucket (API, MCP, CLI)
- Deploy a site from Git (API, MCP, CLI)

What it can't do, and why:

- Buy a plan: Checkout is in the console behind sign-in; cards only.
- Deploy functions or sites on the self-hosted copy here: They need Docker.

27 more tasks it offers:

- Add or change a table/collection column (API, MCP, CLI)
- Delete a row/document (API, MCP, CLI)
- Set row/document-level permissions (API, MCP, CLI)
- Run a full-text or vector search (API, MCP, CLI)
- Add a read replica to a database (API)
- Back up a database (API)
- Create a database trigger (event-driven function) (API, MCP, CLI)
- Schedule a cron job (scheduled function) (API, MCP, CLI)
- Invoke a function (API, MCP, CLI)
- Read function execution logs (API, MCP, CLI)
- Transform an image on request (API, MCP)
- Create an expiring shared file link (API, MCP)
- Delete a file (API, MCP)
- Subscribe to live data changes (API)
- Configure sign-in methods (OAuth2, magic URL, OTP, phone) (API, MCP, CLI)
- Create a user group / team (API, MCP, CLI)
- Send an email, SMS, or push message (API, MCP, CLI)
- Register a webhook (API, CLI)
- Enable two-factor authentication (API, MCP)
- Query the Appwrite API via GraphQL (API)
- Create an API key (API, CLI)
- Connect a custom domain (API)
- Set a member's role or permissions (API, MCP)
- Read the audit log (API)
- Set firewall and rate-limit rules (Web app)
- Read usage and quotas (API)
- Download invoices (Web app)

### Self-hosted edition

L3 · Does the work.

Appwrite also ships an edition you run yourself. Our agent installed it on its own server in about 8 minutes and drove it the same way, doing 75% of the core work.

## Tips for agent builders

- Appwrite Cloud is closed to agent sign-up by robots.txt; for your own copy, run the self-hosted edition (appwrite/appwrite image) and create the console account with POST /v1/account using project console
- On self-hosted, use the local MCP server: pip/uvx mcp-server-appwrite with APPWRITE_ENDPOINT, APPWRITE_PROJECT_ID and APPWRITE_API_KEY; it speaks MCP 2026-07-28 over stdio
- With the MCP server, call appwrite_search_tools first to get the hidden tool name, then appwrite_call_tool with confirm_write true for writes
- Use custom row ids instead of ID.unique when you may retry: a repeat then returns 409 row_already_exists instead of a duplicate
- Columns and indexes are created asynchronously (202, status processing): poll the columns list until status is available before writing rows
- In CLI 28.9.0 use `appwrite client --endpoint --project-id --key` for browser-free work and `push tables|buckets --all --force`; there is no `deploy` command
