# Backblaze B2: L1 · Needs a person

As of 6 Oct 2026, an AI agent can't sign up for Backblaze B2 on its own.

Needs a person stops this one before it starts: both sign-up pages show a Google reCAPTCHA v2 checkbox on Backblaze's own Security Check page, so our agent never got past the form to verify, get a key, or make a call. Pay and cancel never came up either: our agent had no account to check out from or close. What works well sits past that wall: Markdown docs, an llms.txt file, and an official MCP server with a wide set of tools, all ready once a person signs up, verifies, and makes the key by hand. Deleting the account, per the docs, is a web-console step only.

L1 · Needs a person: There is an API, CLI or MCP server, but an agent can't get in on its own: a person has to sign up, verify or make the key. What it does once a person sets it up shows next to the level.

- Find: Some docs for agents (llms.txt and an MCP server)
- Access: Can't sign up
- Use: 0% of the work
- Pay: Payment not reached
- Leave: Nothing to cancel (Can't delete its account)
- Next: let an agent sign up on its own
- With an account set up by a person: not measured yet.

## Part scores

- Agent-ready setup: llms.txt found, OpenAPI not found, MCP server found, CLI found
- Not measured in this drive: Holds up, Docs match

## Who gets in

- Agents on a server: Stopped by a CAPTCHA on the sign-up form.
- Signed agents: Stopped by a check before the sign-up page.
- Agents in a person's browser: Not measured yet.

Sign-up page checked 12 Oct 2026. Signed agents: the ones Cloudflare verifies.

## Checkpoints

- **Docs**: Headless: Docs and API reference fetched headless; Accept: text/markdown returns Markdown (text/plain, vary: Accept); /llms.txt present; no OpenAPI found.
- **Sign up**: Needs a human: Web form only; both sign-up pages show a 'Security Check' with a reCAPTCHA v2 checkbox ('Not so fast! Do you currently or have ever identified as a robot?').
- **Verify**: Blocked: no account: sign-up blocked by reCAPTCHA v2 interstitial
- **Key**: Blocked: Application keys come from the web console or b2_create_key, both need an account.
- **First call**: Blocked: No key; no-account API calls return 400/401/403 with clear errors.
- **First action**: Blocked: no account: sign-up blocked by reCAPTCHA v2 interstitial
- **Pay**: Not reached: No 402, no x402/MPP/UCP, not in x402 Bazaar or mpp.dev. Sign-up says 'No credit card required'; paying is done in the web console of an account that only a human can create past reCAPTCHA. Checkout not observed.
- **Cancel**: Not needed: Nothing to cancel: our agent used the free plan.
- **Delete**: Blocked: Per docs web only: My Settings > Delete Account, confirmed by a code or the password. Not tried: no account.

## Does Backblaze B2 have an MCP server, and can an agent connect to it?

Yes. Backblaze B2 has an official MCP server. The server runs on the agent's own machine and lists 40 tools.

A new agent can't get in on its own: in the drive of 6 Oct 2026, a person on our team set up the account once, then the agent took over. Through the MCP server, 1 of our agent's 7 attempts worked.

## How does an AI agent get a Backblaze B2 API key?

In the drive of 6 Oct 2026, our agent was blocked at this step and got no key. Application keys come from the web console or b2_create_key, both need an account.

## Paying the agent way

Payment not reached.

It has a free plan.

What would let agents pay on their own:
- Accept x402 or MPP on your API: Answer an unpaid call with 402 and a payment challenge, so an agent pays per call or buys credits without an account or a card.
- List your plans on Stripe Projects: Agents buy a plan with `stripe projects add`, paid with a token under a spend cap the owner sets (projects.dev).
From the drive of 5 Oct 2026.

## What an agent can do

- Read the Backblaze docs headless as Markdown (Accept: text/markdown)
- Run the official B2 MCP server and list its 40 tools without an account

## What it cannot do

- Create a Backblaze account: reCAPTCHA v2 interstitial on the sign-up pages
- Get an application key or call any B2 API, CLI or MCP tool: needs an account
- Pay with an agent rail: no 402/x402/MPP; billing only in the web console
- Delete the account headless: web console only, per the docs

## Tips for the owner

1. Let signed agents reach the sign-up form
2. Add a programmatic sign-up path
3. Publish an OpenAPI spec for the Native API
4. Serve Markdown docs as text/markdown

## Tips for agent builders

- Use the official MCP server: npx -y @backblaze-labs/b2-mcp (MCP 2026-07-28, stdio).
- A human must create the account and an application key (web console > App Keys); after that B2 is reachable by API, the b2 CLI, S3 or MCP.
- Fetch docs as Markdown with Accept: text/markdown.
