# Codeberg L1 · Needs a person

Codeberg is a free home for source code.

**Can an AI agent use Codeberg? No, its robots.txt says no.** Codeberg's robots.txt disallows AI agents on sign-up, so our agent didn't sign up on its own.

Category: Source control · Connects by: API · Agent payments: None found · Driven: 28 Oct 2026

**How to connect**
- CLI install: `pipx install codeberg-cli` (documented). Source: https://pypi.org/project/codeberg-cli/
- Docs page: `https://docs.codeberg.org/` (tested in our drive). Source: https://docs.codeberg.org/

**Level 1: Needs a person.** Agents can't get in on their own.
- Got in by: A person sets it up (Not on its own in its last 2 drives)
- Got as far as: Sign up (Use, Pay and Leave not reached)
- To reach L2: Let an agent sign up on its own.

2 drives on one day, awaiting confirmation

[What the levels mean](https://agentdrives.com/method/levels?via=md)

## From finding it to leaving

What an agent managed without a person, at each step.

1. **Find**: On its own. Docs it can act on: an OpenAPI. 77 doc pages read.
2. **Get in**: Stopped. Can't sign up. Robots.txt closes the whole site to AI agents acting for a user. Stopped here.
3. **Use**: Not reached. Tasks need an account.
4. **Pay**: Nothing to do. No plan to buy.
5. **Leave**: Not reached. Nothing to cancel or delete.

## Getting in

None of the 2 ways in got our agent in on its own; one got partway.

Where it stopped: **Email and password**. Robots.txt closes the whole site to AI agents acting for a user.

- Both kinds of agent (On a server, or in its own browser): No. Stops at sign-up: its robots.txt disallows AI agents there.
- Signed agent: Not checked. Not checked: its robots.txt asks crawlers to stay off the sign-up page.

| Way in | What happened |
|---|---|
| Runs locally, no account | Partway |
| Email and password | Stopped by robots.txt |

- Crawlers: **robots.txt disallows AI agents on sign-up.** To let agents sign up, remove the rule that names them.

## What an agent can do with Codeberg

No task was tried: our agent couldn't get into Codeberg.

Core tasks Codeberg offers an agent:

- Create a code repository (API)
- Push commits to a repository (CLI)
- Open and merge a pull request (API)
- Review a pull request (API)
- Create a task or issue (API)
- Run a CI/CD workflow (Web app)
- Publish a website (Web app)

What it can't do, and why:

- Read the API description on codeberg.org: Robots.txt disallows it for all user agents.
- Publish a website with Codeberg Pages: It needs a codeberg.org account and is not in the self-hosted software.

19 more tasks it offers:

- Deploy a serverless function (Web app)
- Create a repository wiki page (API, CLI)
- Publish a release (API)
- Store large files with Git LFS (API, CLI)
- Create a user group (API)
- Create a workspace (API)
- Set a member's role or permissions (API)
- Invite a member (API)
- Register a webhook (API)
- Migrate a repository from another host (API)
- Create an API key (API)
- Enable two-factor authentication (Web app)
- Add a self-hosted CI agent (CLI)
- Resolve merge conflicts (CLI)
- Connect a custom domain to a Pages site (Web app)
- Search a product directory (API)
- Translate a project's strings (Web app)
- Set repository and profile visibility (API)
- Change account settings (API)

**Surface audit:** 521 documented operations, 0 run, 0 passed, 458 blocked (sandbox or plan limits), 63 left out to stay safe.

### Self-hosted edition

L4 · Runs on its own.

Codeberg also ships an edition you run yourself. Our agent installed it on its own server in about 3 minutes and drove it the same way, doing 86% of the core work.

## Tips for agent builders

- On codeberg.org, respect robots.txt: there is no way in for a named agent. Run Forgejo yourself: image data.forgejo.org/forgejo/forgejo:<major>-rootless with FORGEJO__security__INSTALL_LOCK=true and sqlite3
- Get a Forgejo token with POST /api/v1/users/{user}/tokens (basic auth; add X-Forgejo-OTP once 2FA is on); scopes like read:repository are enforced
- Register CI runners with a token from GET /api/v1/user/actions/runners/registration-token: a repo-level runner ignores your other repos
- Approving your own PR is refused (422); submit a COMMENT review instead
