# GitHub: L4 · Runs on its own

As of 13 Oct 2026, an AI agent gets into GitHub on its own and does 89% of the core work.

Source: https://agentdrives.com/tools/github?via=md · driven 13 Oct 2026 by AgentDrives's agent · 1 drive so far · Rules of 15 Oct 2026 (https://agentdrives.com/method/rules?via=md) · license CC BY 4.0

Runs on its own once it holds an existing identity: L4 · Runs on its own. Sign-up itself never got past a block on the signup page, so every later call ran on an existing account approved once through device-flow login. From there the work ran headless: REST, GraphQL, the gh CLI and the official MCP server created repos, commits, pull requests, reviews, issues and Actions runs, repeated across the core work. Codespaces refused our datacenter network, and the cloud coding agent needs a paid plan, so neither ran. Nothing to cancel on the free plan; account deletion is documented as web-only, so our agent revoked its grant and left the identity in place.

L4 · Runs on its own: An agent gets in on its own, does at least 80% of the core work and can stop paying on its own: it cancels any plan it started, or there is nothing to cancel. Whether it can also remove what it made shows next to the level.

- Find: Docs for agents (llms.txt, an OpenAPI and an MCP server; a docs page for each core task)
- Access: No key needed, sign-up in a browser
- Use: 89% of the work
- Pay: Payment not tried (robots.txt keeps our agent off the payment page for now)
- Leave: Leaves on its own (Nothing to cancel, made nothing to delete)
- Ways in: No key needed, 0 of 9 core tasks; Sign-up in a browser, 8 of 9 core tasks
- Next: pay without a person

## Part scores

- Holds up: 59/100
- Agent-ready setup: llms.txt found, OpenAPI found, MCP server found, CLI found
- Not measured in this drive: Docs match

## Who gets in

- Agents on a server: Get in on their own.
- Signed agents: Stopped by a check before the sign-up page.
- Agents in a person's browser: Not measured yet.

Sign-up page checked 15 Oct 2026. Signed agents: the ones Cloudflare verifies.

## Ways in

- No key needed: Got in, under a minute; part of the work done
- Email and password: Stopped by a CAPTCHA
- Continue with Google: Not tried: Google blocks automated sign-in
- CLI code login: Got in, 12 min
- Sign-in for apps (OAuth, MCP): Not tried: the same as another way

## The docs

543 of 2,517 pages read. Complete.

- A getting-started page
- An auth page
- Errors listed with their codes
- Code examples on some pages
- Newest page updated 5 Aug 2026
- A page for 10 of 10 core tasks

## Tried as documented

19 of 25 documented ways to do the core work worked when tried.

- 2 documented ways didn't work
- 3 not tried (a paid plan, or no way to reach it)

## Checkpoints

- **Docs**: Headless: llms.txt on github.com and docs.github.com, markdown by Accept: text/markdown and .md URLs, docs Article/Search APIs, OpenAPI 3.0.3 in github/rest-api-description.
- **Sign up**: Not needed: CLI code login: done.
- **Verify**: Not needed: CLI code login: done.
- **Key**: In a browser: On our agent's existing GitHub account (fresh: false): gh auth login device flow, code approved at github.com/login/device in the browser. No API to mint a token headless.
- **First call**: Headless: GET /user with the gh token; public reads also work with no token.
- **First action**: Headless: POST /user/repos created a repo, read back.
- **Pay**: Not tried: No x402/MPP/402, no billing API or MCP tool; we paid nothing (pay_tx: no 402). Settings > Billing and licensing shows 'Upgrade to GitHub Pro' -> /account/upgrade?plan=pro&source=..., which robots.txt disallows for all user agents (/*?plan=*), so the checkout was not opened; processor and card form not seen.
- **Cancel**: Not needed: Nothing to cancel: our agent used the free plan.
- **Delete**: Blocked: No account was made by this drive; the account used is our agent's GitHub identity, kept. GitHub documents account deletion as web-only (Settings > Account > Delete your account, type username to confirm). All drive data deleted and the gh grant revoked.

## Does GitHub have an MCP server, and can an agent connect to it?

Yes. GitHub has an official MCP server. The server is hosted, lists 95 tools and speaks the 28 Jul 2026 MCP spec.

A new agent can get in on its own: in the drive of 13 Oct 2026, our agent got its key without signing up, and without a person. Through the MCP server, 8 of our agent's 9 attempts worked.

## How does an AI agent get a GitHub API key?

In the drive of 13 Oct 2026, our agent got its GitHub API key in a browser, without a person. On our agent's existing GitHub account (fresh: false): gh auth login device flow, code approved at github.com/login/device in the browser. No API to mint a token headless.

## Paying the agent way

Not tried yet: robots.txt keeps our agent off the payment page for now.

The checkout: Chose a plan; the checkout didn't open: GitHub Pro; Checkout: a checkout; No CAPTCHA at checkout.

It has a free plan.

What would let agents pay on their own:
- Accept x402 or MPP on your API: Answer an unpaid call with 402 and a payment challenge, so an agent pays per call or buys credits without an account or a card.
- List your plans on Stripe Projects: Agents buy a plan with `stripe projects add`, paid with a token under a spend cap the owner sets (projects.dev).
Ways to pay checked 13 Oct 2026.

## What an agent can do

- Create, update and delete repositories
- Commit files and read history through the contents and commits APIs
- Open, review (comment) and merge pull requests
- Open, label, close and delete issues
- Dispatch a GitHub Actions workflow and read its run and logs
- Create a Projects board, add issues, rename and delete it
- Ask Copilot Chat on github.com (Copilot Free) in the browser
- Publish an npm package to GitHub Packages
- Turn on GitHub Pages and get a live site
- Create webhooks and read their deliveries
- Cut releases with assets
- Start Discussions threads
- Enable CodeQL default setup and Dependabot alerts
- Drive all of this through the official remote MCP server

## What it cannot do

- Sign up: DataDome blocks github.com/signup for our signed agent from a datacenter IP; no sign-up API
- Create a Codespace: API answers an HTML 429 'secondary rate limit' with 4999/5000 left; web UI says CS_NET_01 'couldn't create your Codespace from your current network'
- Approve own pull request: GitHub refuses author approval (422); needs a second account
- Delegate to Copilot cloud agent: not in Copilot Free
- Get a token without a browser: no token-minting API; device flow needs a browser approval

## Tips for the owner

1. Let verified agents reach the sign-up
2. Return JSON with Retry-After on Codespaces limits
3. Say why Codespaces refused the network in the API
4. Offer a headless token path for agents
5. Publish a current OpenAPI at a stable URL

## Tips for agent builders

- Use the remote MCP server at api.githubcopilot.com/mcp/ with a gh token; send X-MCP-Toolsets: all for Actions and Projects tools, and mirror owner/repo in Mcp-Param-owner / Mcp-Param-repo headers.
- Map names have moved: create_issue is issue_write method create, run_workflow is actions_run_trigger, add_project_item is projects_write.
- Commit through PUT /repos/{o}/{r}/contents/{path} when git push is not an option.
- Project items can take a few seconds to show up after addProjectV2ItemById.
- The gh OAuth token has no delete:packages scope by default: request it at login if you will delete packages.
- On the device-flow approval page the Authorize button stays disabled until it is scrolled into view and the window has focus.
