# OpenProject L1 · Needs a person

OpenProject is open-source project management software.

**Can an AI agent use OpenProject? No.** Our agent couldn't get into OpenProject on its own.

Category: Project management · Connects by: MCP, API · Agent payments: None found · Driven: 26 Oct 2026

**How to connect**
- API base URL: `https://qa.openproject-edge.com` (documented). Source: https://www.openproject.org/docs/api/endpoints/root/

**Level 1: Needs a person.** Agents can't get in on their own.
- Got in by: A person sets it up (Not on its own in its drive)
- Got as far as: Sign up (Use, Pay and Leave not reached)
- To reach L2: Let an agent sign up on its own.

## From finding it to leaving

What an agent managed without a person, at each step.

1. **Find**: On its own. Docs it can act on: an OpenAPI and an MCP server. 600 doc pages read.
2. **Get in**: Stopped. Can't sign up. The cloud trial stayed stuck on creating and no mail came. Stopped here.
3. **Use**: Not reached. Tasks need an account.
4. **Pay**: Not reached. Buying needs an account.
5. **Leave**: Not reached. Nothing to cancel or delete.

## Getting in

None of the 3 ways in got our agent in on its own; one got partway.

Where it stopped: **Email and password**. The cloud trial stayed stuck on creating and no mail came.

- Both kinds of agent (On a server, or in its own browser): No. Stops at sign-up: Cloud trial never finishes creating.
- Signed agent: Not checked. Not checked: its robots.txt asks crawlers to stay off the sign-up page.

| Way in | What happened |
|---|---|
| Runs locally, no account | Partway |
| Email and password | An error from the product |
| Sign-in for apps (OAuth, MCP) | Not tried: The same as another way |

## What an agent can do with OpenProject

No task was tried: our agent couldn't get into OpenProject.

Core tasks OpenProject offers an agent:

- Create a task or issue (MCP)
- Update a task (MCP)
- Complete a task or change its status (MCP)
- Create a project or board (API, MCP)
- Create a board, Gantt or calendar view (Web app)
- Assign a task (API, MCP)
- Set a dependency between tasks (MCP)
- Log time on a task or project (API, MCP)

What it can't do, and why:

- Create an API token without a browser: Tokens are only made on a web page; there is no token API.
- Buy a plan on its own: The checkout asks for a phone number before the card form.

24 more tasks it offers:

- List projects or boards (API, MCP)
- Search or filter tasks (MCP)
- Comment on a task (MCP)
- Attach a file to a task (Web app)
- Plan a sprint (Web app)
- Set a project budget or billable rates (Web app)
- Read a project report (Web app)
- Create a doc or wiki page (Web app)
- Add a milestone to a project (MCP)
- Group projects into a portfolio (MCP)
- Read team workload (Web app)
- Set a custom field on a task (MCP)
- Configure workflow statuses and task types (MCP)
- Share a project (Web app)
- Link a pull request or commit to a task (API)
- Capture a task from email or chat (Web app)
- Set a reminder (Web app)
- Build a dashboard of work data (Web app)
- Set a member's role or permissions (Web app)
- Configure SAML SSO (Web app)
- Provision users with SCIM (API)
- Enable two-factor authentication (Web app)
- Set the brand logo and colours (Web app)
- Register an OAuth app (Web app)

### Self-hosted edition

L4 · Runs on its own.

OpenProject also ships an edition you run yourself. Our agent installed it on its own server in about 12 minutes and drove it the same way, doing 100% of the core work.

## Tips for agent builders

- Self-host with the Compose images (openproject:17-slim seeder, web and worker plus postgres): the API is complete in minutes; run the worker or deletes and copies never finish.
- Authenticate with HTTP Basic apikey:<token>, or get a Bearer token without a browser with POST /oauth/token grant_type=client_credentials once an admin OAuth app exists.
- Add yourself as a project member (POST /api/v3/memberships) before assigning work packages, or the API answers 422 "not allowed to be 'Assignee'".
- Send lockVersion on every work package PATCH; a stale one gives 409 UpdateConflict.
- Use _links.targetVersions (an array) for versions; _links.version is accepted with 200 and ignored.
- GET /work_packages/{id}/relations redirects there.
- On MCP, check the text of create_work_package_relation results: a failure can come back with isError=false.
- For team workload without the Enterprise Team Planner, GET /api/v3/projects/{id}/work_packages with a datesInterval filter and groupBy=assignee.
