# Plane: L4 · Runs on its own

As of 15 Oct 2026, an AI agent gets into Plane on its own and does 90% of the core work.

Gets in on its own, L4 · Runs on its own: it signs up, confirms the emailed code, and does the project work over the documented API and the official MCP server, with clean read-back on every call. It never reached account deletion: the workspace comes down in the UI, but the account itself only deactivates, and a later code login brings it back. Paying never finished either: the trial starts without a card, but the card step moves to Stripe's hosted portal, closed to our agent by robots.txt there.

L4 · Runs on its own: An agent gets in on its own, does at least 80% of the core work and can stop paying on its own: it cancels any plan it started, or there is nothing to cancel. Whether it can also remove what it made shows next to the level.

- Find: Docs for agents (llms.txt, an OpenAPI and an MCP server; a docs page for each core task)
- Access: MCP sign-in, sign-up in a browser
- Use: 90% of the work
- Pay: Payment not tried
- Leave: Cancels on its own (Deletes its data, but the login stays)
- Ways in: MCP sign-in, 0 of 10 core tasks; Sign-up in a browser, 9 of 10 core tasks
- Next: pay without a person
- robots.txt asks crawlers to stay off sign-up and the API. Nothing to fix. It keeps these pages out of search and doesn't stop agents signing up.

## Part scores

- Holds up: 74/100
- Agent-ready setup: llms.txt found, OpenAPI found, MCP server found, CLI not found
- Not measured in this drive: Docs match

## Who gets in

- Agents on a server: Get in on their own.
- Signed agents: The sign-up page opens.
- Agents in a person's browser: Not measured yet.

Sign-up page checked 15 Oct 2026. Signed agents: the ones Cloudflare verifies.

## Ways in

- Email and code: Got in, 9 min
- Email and password: Not tried: the same as another way

- Continue with Google: Not tried: no account yet
- Sign-in for apps (OAuth, MCP): Got in, 4 min
- Company single sign-on: Not tried: needs a person's account
- A key from a person: Not tried: needs a person's account

## The docs

600 of 1,301 pages read. Complete.

- A getting-started page
- An auth page
- Errors listed with their codes
- Code examples on most pages
- Newest page updated 16 Oct 2026
- A page for 10 of 10 core tasks

## Tried as documented

18 of 20 documented ways to do the core work worked when tried.

- 1 documented way didn't work
- 1 not tried (a paid plan, or no way to reach it)

## Checkpoints

- **Docs**: Headless: llms.txt with Link headers, OpenAPI 3.1.0 (40 paths) plus a larger v1/v2 reference (982 pages in developers llms.txt), markdown by Accept and .md.
- **Sign up**: In a browser: app.plane.so/sign-up: email, then a 6-digit code; no CAPTCHA; no sign-up API.
- **Verify**: In a browser: The emailed code verifies the address; it arrived within a minute and is valid 10 minutes.
- **Key**: In a browser: Personal access token made in Profile > Personal Access Tokens (expiry required in the UI though the docs call it optional); no API or CLI to mint or revoke keys. MCP OAuth (DCR + one consent click) also works.
- **First call**: Headless: GET /api/v1/users/me/ and /workspaces/{slug}/projects/ with X-API-Key: 200.
- **First action**: Headless: POST /api/v1/workspaces/{slug}/projects/ 201, read back 200.
- **Pay**: In a browser: No 402/x402/MPP, no billing API or MCP billing tool. A Business trial starts automatically with no card. Billing page 'Start subscription' shows $15.00/seat/month and 'Start subscription and pay' (not clicked); the card goes on Stripe's hosted portal (billing.stripe.com), which robots.txt closes to all user agents, so our agent stopped there. Pro ($8) is only offered as a trial switch.
- **Cancel**: In a browser: The auto trial needed no card and downgrades to Free by itself; deleting the workspace required 'Cancel your trial first', done in the web UI; billing then showed Free Active, 'Free trial used'. No billing API.
- **Delete**: Blocked: Workspace deleted in the UI (data gone, PAT deleted, OAuth token refused); a temp workspace made only to reach the deactivate button may remain.

## Does Plane (plane.so) have an MCP server, and can an agent connect to it?

Yes. Plane has an official MCP server. The server lists 30 tools, signs an agent in with OAuth and speaks the 25 Nov 2025 MCP spec.

A new agent can get in on its own: in the drive of 15 Oct 2026, our agent signed up, verified and got its key without a person. Through the MCP server, 11 of our agent's 12 attempts worked.

## How does an AI agent get a Plane (plane.so) API key?

In the drive of 15 Oct 2026, our agent got its Plane API key in a browser, without a person. Personal access token made in Profile > Personal Access Tokens (expiry required in the UI though the docs call it optional); no API or CLI to mint or revoke keys. MCP OAuth (DCR + one consent click) also works.

## Paying the agent way

Not tried yet.

The checkout: Chose a plan; the checkout didn't open: Business, $15 a month; Checkout: Stripe Checkout; No CAPTCHA at checkout.

It has a free plan.

What would let agents pay on their own:
- Accept x402 or MPP on your API: Answer an unpaid call with 402 and a payment challenge, so an agent pays per call or buys credits without an account or a card.
- List your plans on Stripe Projects: Agents buy a plan with `stripe projects add`, paid with a token under a spend cap the owner sets (projects.dev).
Ways to pay checked 15 Oct 2026.

## What an agent can do

- Create, read, update, close and delete work items over the REST API or MCP
- Create, update and delete projects and turn project features (cycles, modules, epics, intake) on by API
- Plan a cycle with dates and add work items to it
- Create a module and assign work items
- Create, edit and delete project pages
- Create epics and link child work items
- Create initiatives and attach projects
- Comment, link, relate, log time, attach files, set estimates, labels and states on work items
- Bulk-update work items, save views, create templates, teamspaces, customers and webhooks by API
- Ask Plane AI about workspace status in the web app

## What it cannot do

- Sign up or get an API key without a browser: Sign-up is a web form with an emailed code; keys are made only in the web UI
- Create or assign a background AI agent: The documented /{workspace}/ai-agents pages answer an in-app 404 on this workspace; no API or MCP tool for agents
- Pay for a plan on its own: Card entry is on Stripe's hosted portal; no 402 rail or billing API
- Delete the account: Only deactivation exists, and a later email-code sign-in reactivates it
- Import a CSV: The CSV import job ended in 'Error' with no reason shown

## Tips for the owner

1. Add an API to mint and revoke scoped tokens
2. Offer a real account delete
3. Serve MCP (the 28 Jul 2026 spec) and CIMD
4. Fix the AI agents docs or page
5. Accept an agent payment rail
6. Return 404 and 401 consistently in API v1

## Tips for agent builders

- Use the REST API with X-API-Key (v2 for bulk ops and problem+json errors) or the MCP PAT endpoint https://mcp.plane.so/http/api-key/mcp with x-workspace-slug
- New projects made by API have cycles/modules/epics off: PATCH /projects/{id}/features/ first
- Make creates idempotent with external_id + external_source (409 on repeat); Idempotency-Key is ignored
- Estimate points must be POSTed as a raw JSON array to /estimate-points/, not in the estimate body
- Deleted objects can answer 403 instead of 404 in v1: confirm with the list endpoint
- MCP needs protocol 2025-11-25 (initialize), not 2026-07-28
