# Prisma Postgres L4 · Runs on its own

Prisma is a hosted Postgres database with a code library and app hosting.

**Can an AI agent use Prisma Postgres? Yes, without signing up.** Our agent got into Prisma Postgres on its own in 2 minutes and did all 9 of its core tasks.

Category: Databases · Connects by: MCP, API, CLI, SDK · Agent payments: Stripe Projects · Driven: 24 Oct 2026

**How to connect**
- MCP server URL: `https://mcp.prisma.io/mcp` (streamable HTTP, tested in our drive). Source: https://mcp.prisma.io/mcp
- CLI install: `npm install -g prisma` (documented). Source: https://www.prisma.io/
- Docs page: `https://www.prisma.io/docs` (tested in our drive). Source: https://www.prisma.io/docs

**Level 4: Runs on its own.** An agent does the core work and can stop paying on its own.
- Got in by: Try first, claim later (2 minutes, no account)
- Got as far as: Pay: reaches the checkout (Stopped at the €9.27 a month charge)
- To reach L5: Pay without a person.

[What the levels mean](https://agentdrives.com/method/levels?via=md)

## From finding it to leaving

What an agent managed without a person, at each step.

1. **Find**: On its own. Docs it can act on: llms.txt, an OpenAPI and an MCP server. (600 doc pages read)
2. **Get in**: On its own. Try first, claim later, sign-up in a browser. (2 minutes)
3. **Use**: On its own. Did: create a database, tables and rows and read them back; run schema changes and typed queries. (9 of 9 core tasks)
4. **Pay**: Reaches the checkout. Stopped at the €9.27 a month charge. (1 way for agents to pay)
5. **Leave**: On its own. Nothing to cancel; its account stays.

## Getting in

4 of 6 ways in worked without a person.

The way that worked: **Try first, claim later**, 2 minutes. No inbox, browser or person needed.

- Agent on a server (API, MCP, CLI): Partly. Without an account (try first, claim later) it gets an API key, makes its first API call and does all of the core work, then stops at payment: paying takes a checkout page in a browser.
- Assistant in its own browser (Like ChatGPT agent): Not checked. Sign-up wasn't tried in this drive.
- Signed agent: Yes. The sign-up page opens.

| Way in | What happened |
|---|---|
| Try first, claim later | Worked |
| Email and password | Worked |
| CLI code login | Worked |
| Sign-in for apps (OAuth, MCP) | Worked |
| Continue with GitHub | Not tried: Not part of this drive |
| Continue with Google | Not tried: Not part of this drive |

- Crawlers: **robots.txt asks crawlers to stay off sign-up and the API.** Nothing to fix. It keeps these pages out of search and doesn't stop agents signing up.

## What an agent can do with Prisma Postgres

All 9 core tasks done, and 17 of 21 others.

- Reliability: core tasks that worked on all 3 runs: 92 of 100
- Handles mistakes: clear errors, retries without duplicates, honest limits: 57 of 100

Core tasks:

| Task | Result | Done through | Offered, not tried |
|---|---|---|---|
| Create a database | Done | API, MCP, CLI | – |
| Define a data model schema and generate a typed client | Done | API, CLI | – |
| Deploy a schema migration | Done | API, MCP, CLI | – |
| Create or update a record | Done | API, MCP | – |
| Run a database query | Done | API, MCP | – |
| Delete a record | Done | API | – |
| Deploy an app to Prisma Compute | Done | API, MCP, CLI | – |
| List databases and read their schema | Done | API, MCP, CLI | – |
| Browse and edit data visually in Prisma Studio | Done | – | CLI |

17 of 21 other tasks done:

- Query a database over a REST API: Done
- Create a deploy preview environment per feature branch: Done
- Manage connection string credentials: Done
- Run a vector similarity search (pgvector): Done
- Read Compute app logs: Done
- Set environment variables and secrets for a deployment: Done
- Create a storage bucket: Done
- Mint or revoke a bucket access key: Done
- Upload a file to a bucket: Done
- Create a signed URL for a file: Done
- Delete a storage bucket: Done
- Choose a database or app region: Done
- See Composer services topology: Done
- Enable a Postgres extension: Done
- Read usage and cost breakdown: Done
- Install Prisma coding-agent skills: Done
- Search Prisma docs from an AI agent: Done
- Inspect slow queries (Query Insights): Partly
- Back up a database: Paid plan
- Restore a database backup: Paid plan. Needs a paid plan.
- Set a spend limit: Paid plan
- Roll back a deployment: Blocked. Only the newest version is kept, so no earlier one exists.
- Connect a custom domain to an app: Blocked
- Embed Prisma Studio data editor in your own app: Not tried

Paid-plan tasks don't count toward the level. The drive used the free plan.

What it can't do, and why:

- Pay for a plan: Only a card checkout; no way for an agent to pay.
- Run admin or production writes through MCP alone: The owner must approve each class in the web console.
- Roll back a deployment: Only the newest version is kept, so no earlier one exists.
- See slow queries in Query Insights: The page stayed empty on the free plan.
- Back up and restore a database: Needs a paid plan.

## Tips for agent builders

- No account needed to start: npx create-db@latest --json returns a connection string and claim URL (24 h).
- After one login, mint a service token via POST /v1/workspaces/{id}/service-tokens and use PRISMA_SERVICE_TOKEN + PRISMA_WORKSPACE_ID for CLI and REST: no approvals there.
- MCP needs OAuth (DCR); expect approval_required on admin and production writes, poll get_agent_approval, retry with approvalId.
- Prisma ORM 8: contract emit replaces generate; migration plan + db migrate replace migrate dev/deploy.
- Destructive CLI steps need --confirm <name>; --yes is refused.
- Delete Compute services before deleting their project.
- Change code before redeploying if only env vars changed: an unchanged redeploy is a no-op.
