# Tavily: L3 · Does the work

As of 16 Oct 2026, an AI agent gets into Tavily on its own and does 50% of the core work.

Tavily is easy for an agent to start with: keyless Search and Extract work on REST, a modern 28 Jul 2026 MCP server and the CLI with no account, and covered 4 of 8 core tasks. Getting further fails: email sign-up shows a Cloudflare Turnstile checkbox and GitHub/OAuth sign-in is refused by Auth0 as a 'Suspicious User Agent', so Crawl, Map and Research (free with a key) were out of reach. The first-party x402 rail sells only search, and our signed payments came back settlement_failed.

L3 · Does the work: An agent gets in on its own and does at least half the core work, each task read back.

- Find: Docs for agents (llms.txt, an OpenAPI and an MCP server; a docs page for each core task)
- Access: No key needed (Can't sign up for one)
- Use: 50% of the work
- Pay: Tried to pay (The payment failed on the seller's side)
- Leave: Leaves on its own (Nothing to cancel, made nothing to delete)
- Ways in: No key needed, 4 of 8 core tasks
- Next: let an agent sign up for an account on its own (without one it does 50% of the core work)
- robots.txt asks crawlers to stay off sign-up and the API. Nothing to fix. It keeps these pages out of search and doesn't stop agents signing up.

## Part scores

- Holds up: 90/100
- Agent-ready setup: llms.txt found, OpenAPI found, MCP server found, CLI found
- Not measured in this drive: Docs match

## Who gets in

- Agents on a server: Get in on their own.
- Signed agents: The site opens.
- Agents in a person's browser: Not measured yet.

Sign-up page checked 16 Oct 2026. Signed agents: the ones Cloudflare verifies.

## Ways in

- No key needed: Got in, 1 min
- Pay per call: An error from the product
- Email and password: Stopped by a CAPTCHA
- Sign-in for apps (OAuth, MCP): Refused
- A key from a person: Not tried: needs a person's account

## The docs

113 of 114 pages read. Complete.

- A getting-started page
- An auth page
- Errors listed with their codes
- Code examples on most pages
- Newest page updated 15 Oct 2026
- A page for 8 of 8 core tasks

## Tried as documented

9 of 24 documented ways to do the core work worked when tried.

- 1 documented way didn't work
- 14 not tried (a paid plan, or no way to reach it)

## Checkpoints

- **Docs**: Headless: docs.tavily.com with llms.txt, every page as .md and via Accept: text/markdown, OpenAPI 3.0.3, and a keyless quick start.
- **Sign up**: Not needed: Not needed: a documented route works without an account.
- **Verify**: Not needed: Not needed: a documented route works without an account.
- **Key**: Not needed: Not needed: a documented route works without an account.
- **First call**: Headless: POST https://api.tavily.com/search with X-Tavily-Access-Mode: keyless answered 200 with results; the same works on the remote MCP server and the tvly CLI.
- **First action**: Headless: Keyless /extract returned clean page content; Tavily stores nothing per call. Crawl, Map and Research need an API key.
- **Pay**: Tried, not settled: A first-party x402 v2 rail sells advanced Search for $0.01 a call with no account; our signed payments were all answered 402 settlement_failed, so no payment went through. Plans (Pay As You Go $0.008/credit, Project $30/month) are bought in the app.tavily.com dashboard, which our agent could not enter; no billing API.
- **Cancel**: Not needed: Nothing to cancel: our agent used the free plan.
- **Delete**: Not needed: The way in that worked (keyless) stores nothing for the caller. No Tavily account was entered; the GitHub grant given during the refused sign-in was revoked. Whether Auth0 kept a record of the GitHub identity is unknown.

## Does Tavily have an MCP server, and can an agent connect to it?

Yes. Tavily has an official MCP server. The server is hosted, lists 5 tools, signs an agent in with OAuth and speaks the 28 Jul 2026 MCP spec.

A new agent can get in on its own: in the drive of 16 Oct 2026, our agent got working access without signing up. Through the MCP server, 4 of our agent's 10 attempts worked.

## How does an AI agent get a Tavily API key?

In the drive of 16 Oct 2026, our agent needed no key. Not needed: a documented route works without an account.

## Paying the agent way

Tried to pay: the payment failed on the seller's side.

The checkout: Plan and price: Project, $30 a month; No CAPTCHA at checkout; Offers x402 payment.
Ways to pay it offers an agent: x402 (on its own domain · Base, another network); MPP (a third party's · listed or named only).
No card needed to start.

What would let agents pay on their own:
- List your plans on Stripe Projects: Agents buy a plan with `stripe projects add`, paid with a token under a spend cap the owner sets (projects.dev).
- Sell the plan or credits over the rail, not only side endpoints: Let the paid call buy what the product sells, so the rail covers the whole product.
Ways to pay checked 16 Oct 2026.

## What an agent can do

- Search the web and get ranked results with no account or key (REST, MCP, CLI)
- Choose basic or advanced search depth (1 vs 2 credits)
- Get an AI-written answer with search results
- Filter by topic, date window, include/exclude domains, country
- Get images with descriptions and full raw page content in search
- Extract clean content from URLs, with query-focused chunks

## What it cannot do

- Crawl, map or research: These need an API key; sign-up refused our agent (Turnstile on email, Auth0 'Suspicious User Agent' on GitHub and OAuth)
- Get an API key: Keys come only from the web dashboard behind the same sign-up
- Pay per call over x402: Every signed payment came back 402 settlement_failed; x402 sells only /search anyway
- Use answers over MCP: tavily_search rejects include_answer (validation error)
- Sustained keyless use: Keyless caps hit within ~15 minutes of light use; MCP reported the monthly keyless cap reached

## Tips for the owner

1. Stop refusing agent user agents at Auth0
2. Let verified agents pass email sign-up
3. Offer an agent sign-up or key claim
4. Fix x402 settlement and sell every endpoint
5. Point next_actions only at real routes
6. Accept include_answer in MCP tavily_search
7. Publish the keyless limits and align counters

## Tips for agent builders

- Send X-Tavily-Access-Mode: keyless to use /search and /extract (REST, MCP, CLI) with no key
- Keyless caps are tight: honour Retry-After on 429 hourly_cap_reached; the MCP may report a monthly cap
- MCP tool names use underscores (tavily_search); tavily_search has no include_answer, use REST for answers
- Crawl, Map, Research need an API key from a human-made account
- x402 at x402.tavily.com sells only advanced search ($0.01)
- Errors are JSON with code, message and next_actions; extract reports per-URL failures in failed_results
