# Upstash L4 · Runs on its own

Upstash sells serverless data tools such as Redis, vector search, message queues, workflows, sandboxes and file storage.

**Can an AI agent use Upstash? Yes, without signing up.** Our agent got into Upstash on its own in 2 minutes and did all 6 of its core tasks.

Category: Databases · Connects by: MCP, API, CLI, SDK · Agent payments: Stripe Projects · Driven: 31 Oct 2026

**How to connect**
- MCP server URL: `https://mcp.upstash.com/mcp` (streamable HTTP, tested in our drive). Source: https://mcp.upstash.com/mcp
- API base URL: `https://api.upstash.com/v2` (documented). Source: https://upstash.com/openapi.json
- CLI install: `npm install -g upstash` (documented). Source: https://upstash.com/
- Docs page: `https://upstash.com/docs/introduction` (tested in our drive). Source: https://upstash.com/docs/introduction

**Level 4: Runs on its own.** An agent does the core work and can stop paying on its own.
- Got in by: No key needed (2 minutes, no account)
- Got as far as: Pay: reaches the checkout (Stopped at the $0.20 per 100K commands charge)
- To reach L5: Pay without a person.

[What the levels mean](https://agentdrives.com/method/levels?via=md)

## From finding it to leaving

What an agent managed without a person, at each step.

1. **Find**: On its own. Docs it can act on: llms.txt, an OpenAPI and an MCP server. (600 doc pages read)
2. **Get in**: On its own. Got in without signing up. (2 minutes)
3. **Use**: On its own. Did: store, read, update and delete Redis data; run vector searches, queue messages, run multi-step workflows and sandboxes, and upload files. (6 of 6 core tasks)
4. **Pay**: Reaches the checkout. Stopped at the $0.20 per 100K commands charge. (1 way for agents to pay)
5. **Leave**: On its own. Nothing to cancel, deletes its account.

## Getting in

3 of 6 ways in worked without a person.

The way that worked: **No key needed**, 2 minutes. No inbox, browser or person needed.

- Agent on a server (API, MCP, CLI): Partly. Without an account (no key needed) it gets an API key, makes its first API call and does all of the core work. Payment: reaches the checkout, stopped at the $0.20 per 100K commands charge.
- Assistant in its own browser (Like ChatGPT agent): Not checked. Sign-up wasn't tried in this drive.
- Signed agent (Known to Cloudflare): Yes. The sign-up page opens.

| Way in | What happened |
|---|---|
| No key needed | Worked |
| Email and password | Worked |
| Sign-in for apps (OAuth, MCP) | Worked |
| Continue with GitHub | Not tried: Not part of this drive |
| Continue with Google | Not tried: Not part of this drive |
| Company single sign-on | Not tried: Needs a person's account |

## What an agent can do with Upstash

All 6 core tasks done, and 22 of 22 others.

- Reliability: core tasks that worked on all 3 runs: 75 of 100
- Handles mistakes: clear errors, retries without duplicates, honest limits: 86 of 100
- Surface tested: documented routes, tools and commands run and checked: 88 of 100
- Docs accuracy: documented operations that behaved as the docs say: 100 of 100
- Docs completeness: how fully the docs describe each operation: 63 of 100

Core tasks:

| Task | Result | Done through | Offered, not tried |
|---|---|---|---|
| Store a key-value pair in Redis | Done | API, MCP, CLI | – |
| Run a vector search | Done | API, MCP | – |
| Publish a reliable HTTP message/background job via QStash | Done | API, MCP | – |
| Build a durable multi-step workflow | Done | API, MCP | – |
| Create a cloud sandbox (Box) | Done | API, MCP | – |
| Upload a file to Blob storage | Done | MCP, CLI | API |

22 of 22 other tasks done:

- Create a Redis database: Done
- Add read regions to a Redis Global Database: Done
- Run a full-text/hybrid search over Redis data: Done
- Filter a vector query by metadata: Done
- Create embeddings with a built-in model: Done
- Schedule a recurring QStash message (cron): Done
- Retry or inspect a failed message from the Dead Letter Queue: Done
- Run shell commands inside a Box sandbox: Done
- Read and write files in a Box sandbox: Done
- Expose a Box sandbox process on a public URL: Done
- Snapshot and restore a Box sandbox: Done
- Delegate a task to the box's built-in coding agent: Done
- Schedule a recurring job inside a Box sandbox: Done
- Create a Blob storage bucket: Done
- Download or list files from a Blob bucket: Done
- Delete a file or prefix from a Blob bucket: Done
- Create a signed URL for a private Blob object: Done
- Set a Blob bucket's cache behavior: Done
- List databases and read their connection details: Done
- Read database usage stats and insights: Done
- Invite a member to a team: Done
- Read the account's audit log: Done
- Back up and restore a Redis database: Paid plan
- Set a monthly spend budget on a database: Paid plan. These need a paid plan.

Paid-plan tasks don't count toward the level. The drive used the free plan.

What it can't do, and why:

- Create a full account without a browser: Sign-up is a web form with an emailed code; no API sign-up was found.
- Create a Developer API key without a browser: The key creation only in the console.
- Pay for a plan on its own: No agent payment option; a card goes into a web form first.
- Delete the account without a browser: The account deletion only in the console.
- Back up a database or set a spend budget: These need a paid plan.

**Surface audit:** 320 documented operations, 278 run, 253 passed, 8 blocked (sandbox or plan limits), 34 left out to stay safe.

## Tips for agent builders

- POST https://upstash.com/start-redis with an Idempotency-Key header for a scratch Redis without an account; POST again with the same key to re-fetch it.
- Workflow logs lag 10-60 s: poll logs_list before concluding a run is missing.
- A Box preview URL (box_preview create) gives you a public HTTPS endpoint to host a workflow or receive QStash deliveries.
- Bulk DLQ endpoints take dlqIds as query parameters; without them they act on every entry.
