Browserbase vs Steel for AI agents
As of 13 Oct 2026, Steel gets an AI agent further: L4 · Runs on its own against L2 · Gets in.
- Find: Docs for agents: llms.txt, an OpenAPI and an MCP server; a docs page for each core task.
- Access: Pay per call.
- Use: 20% of the work.
- Pay: Pays per call for part of it: Paid $0.01 a call (x402), 13 Oct.
- Leave: Leaves on its own: Nothing to cancel, deletes what it made.
In on its own; 20% of the work done. Next: do half of the core work (now 20%)
Gets in on its own, L2 · Gets in: paying per call opens a browser session with no account at all. Our agent read the docs headless, then paid for a session over x402 on Browserbase's own domain, checked its status and shut it down with DELETE, without ever signing up. The key page, agents, functions and higher concurrency all sit behind the dashboard, and sign-up there asks for a phone number, so our agent never reached a key. Pay-per-call needs no plan and nothing to cancel; no account existed to delete.

Got in; first wall at delete (blocked). Next: let an agent buy credits or a plan without a person
Steel is a cloud browser API that lets an AI agent run real Chrome sessions, scrape pages, take screenshots/PDFs, and store logins and profiles. An agent did almost all of this entirely on its own through the API, SDK, CLI, or official MCP server. The one place it needed a human-style browser step was getting in at all: signing up (an emailed link) and the first API key both come from the web dashboard, and deleting the organization left the underlying login account still active.
