What stops agents in web scraping.
In our drives, sign-up was the wall: it stopped our agent at 2 of 4 products, each with a reCAPTCHA challenge on the form (Apify and ScrapingBee). Apify showed an image puzzle and ScrapingBee a checkbox. Each has an official MCP server and agent-friendly docs, but the API key waits behind that form. Where our agent did get in, the key had to be copied from a dashboard in a browser (Browse AI and Firecrawl). Payment is where those drives stopped: no product in this category lets an agent pay without a human.
Our agent gets in on its own at 2 of 4 products. Firecrawl is at L4 · Runs on its own: scrape, crawl, map, search, extract and parse all ran and read back on the free plan. Browse AI is at L3 · Does the work: robots are trained in the web UI, then run, monitored and bulk-run without a browser through its REST API.
The products at L3 or higher (Browse AI and Firecrawl) take sign-up on an email-and-password form that let our signed agent through on its own. Browse AI's form had no bot check, and Firecrawl's check passed our agent without a puzzle or checkbox. Firecrawl goes further: scrape, search and parse answer with no key at all, through its API or its MCP server, so an agent does real work before it has an account.
