Can an AI agent reach the API docs from a product's home page?
101 of 119 products (85%) link their docs in the home page's HTML, one link from home for an AI agent. At 8 of 119, an agent that follows links finds no way to the docs: no link on the home page and no llms.txt that lists them.
What we found.
| From the home page to the docs | Products |
|---|---|
| In the home page's HTML | 101 of 119 (85%) |
| Only in llms.txt | 10 of 119 (8%) |
| Neither | 8 of 119 (7%) |
| What the docs give an agent | Products |
|---|---|
| llms.txt lists the docs | 93 of 119 (78%) |
| An API reference page | 100 of 119 (84%) |
| API reference in llms.txt | 80 of 119 (67%) |
| No docs page found | fewer than 5 |
What to do.
For product owners
- Put a plain docs link in the home page's HTML, not only in a menu a script builds.
- Publish an llms.txt that lists your docs pages and your API reference.
- Serve the docs at docs.yourdomain.com or yourdomain.com/docs too.
For agent builders
- Read the home page's links first, then llms.txt, then try docs.<domain>, developers.<domain> and /docs.
- Don't stop at a home page with no docs link: 10 of 119 products list their docs only in llms.txt.
- Use llms.txt to go straight to the API reference: 80 of 119 products list it there.
Method and limits.
How we tested
- On 12–13 Oct 2026 we read the home pages of the 119 products we drove, without a browser, and looked for a link to docs, developers or an API reference that opened a page.
- Each product's newest drive (1 Oct 2026 to 1 Nov 2026) read its docs: the pages the home page links, docs.<domain>, developers.<domain>, /docs, llms.txt and the sitemaps.
- A page counts as the API reference when its title, headings or address name it.
Limits
- A docs link that a script adds after the page loads isn't in the HTML, so it counts as no link.
- Each home page as it was on the day we read it; each product's docs on the day of its newest drive.
