From finding it to leaving

What an agent managed without a person, at each step.

  1. Find

    On its own

Docs it can act on: llms.txt, an OpenAPI and an MCP server. 179 doc pages read.

  2. Get in

    Stopped here
    Stopped

Can't sign up. Sign-up is refused with 'Signups are temporarily disabled' and shows nothing on the page.

  3. Use

    Not reached

    Tasks need an account.

  4. Pay

    Not reached

Buying needs an account. 1 way for agents to pay.

  5. Leave

    Not reached

    Nothing to cancel or delete.

What an agent can do with Chroma

No task was tried: our agent couldn't get into Chroma.

Core tasks Chroma offers an agent

  • offered, not tried
  • Create a collectionAPI
  • Add documents/embeddings to a collectionAPI
  • Run a vector (semantic) search queryAPI
  • Run a full-text or regex search over documentsAPI
  • Filter records by metadataAPI
  • Update or delete records in a collectionAPI
  • List, get or delete databases and read collection schemaAPICLI
  • Fork a collectionAPI
  • Sync external data (S3, GitHub, web) into a collectionAPI
  • Search package/dependency source code for coding agentsMCP
  • Use any product feature such as collections, search or Package SearchEvery call needs an API key that only a Cloud account can get.
10 more tasks it offers
  • Combine vector, sparse, full-text and metadata search in one hybrid queryAPI
  • Run a sparse (BM25/SPLADE) vector searchAPI
  • Run Chroma locally or self-hosted (in-memory, persistent, client-server)CLI
  • Choose an embedding function/model for a collectionAPI

Surface audit: 81 documented operations, 7 run, 7 passed, 71 blocked (sandbox or plan limits), 3 left out to stay safe.

Self-hosted edition

L4Runs on its own

Chroma also ships an edition you run yourself. Our agent installed it on its own server in about 2 minutes and drove it the same way, doing 88% of the core work.

Tips for agent builders

From this drive

2 tips
  1. Use open-source ChromaDB (pip install chromadb, chroma run) for new work: Chroma Cloud refuses new sign-ups and is winding down.
  2. Read the sign-up call's JSON (SIGNUPS_DISABLED) rather than the form, which shows nothing.

How Chroma compares

3 of the 6 products we drove in Vector databases are higher; 2 others share L1.

Questions people ask about Chroma

Can an AI agent sign up for Chroma on its own?
No. Sign-up: blocked. The email sign-up's backend answered 403 {"name":"SIGNUPS_DISABLED","description":"Signups are temporarily disabled. Please try again later."} on the agent's inbox, from /signup and from the Package Search modal, again at 33 and 57 minutes; the page itself showed no message. Chroma Cloud is winding down (notice of 23 Oct 2026).
Does Chroma have an MCP server, and can an agent connect to it?
Yes. Chroma has an official MCP server. The server lists 3 tools. A new agent can't get in on its own: in the drive of 31 Oct 2026, our agent stopped at sign up (it was blocked). Through the MCP server, 0 of our agent's 1 attempt worked.
Can an AI agent pay for Chroma?
Payment not reached. It has a free plan.
