From finding it to leaving

What an agent managed without a person, at each step.

  1. Find

    Partly

Docs with gaps: an OpenAPI and an MCP server; no getting-started page. 2 doc pages read.

  2. Get in

    Stopped here
    Stopped

Can't sign up. No Matrix account without the CAPTCHA or a paid host.

  3. Use

    Not reached

    Tasks need an account.

  4. Pay

    Reaches the checkout

Stopped at the $3000 a year charge.

  5. Leave

    On its own

Nothing to cancel, deletes its account.

Getting in

None of the 8 ways in got our agent in on its own; 3 got partway.

  • Both kinds of agentOn a server, or in its own browserNoSigning up needs a person: it asks for a bot check.
  • Signed agentKnown to CloudflareNoThe sign-up page opens. The CAPTCHA on the form stops them too.

Tips for agent builders

From this drive

5 tips
  1. Self-host Synapse from ghcr.io/element-hq/synapse (run generate, then start it), create users with register_new_matrix_user, and drive the Matrix Client-Server API with a token from POST /_matrix/client/v3/login.
  2. Point Element Web (app.element.io) at your own homeserver with Edit > Other account provider for the UI-only features such as Export Chat.
  3. Reuse the same transaction id when retrying a send: the server returns the same event_id instead of a duplicate.
  4. On 429 M_LIMIT_EXCEEDED wait the full Retry-After (invites and room creation can ask 30 s or more).
  5. Use /_matrix/client/v1/media/download, not the deprecated /_matrix/media/v3 paths, for new uploads.

Questions people ask about Element

Can an AI agent sign up for Element on its own?
No. Sign-up: needs a human. A bot check from Google reCAPTCHA stopped our agent there. The free app (app.element.io) creates the account on matrix.org: the form at account.matrix.org/register takes username, email and password, then shows a visible reCAPTCHA v2 checkbox ("Please complete the CAPTCHA challenge before continuing"). A handoff was asked. The Matrix API sign-up answers 403 "Registration has been disabled". An Element (EMS) account for paid hosting signed up in the browser with no CAPTCHA, but it holds no Matrix account.
Does Element have an MCP server, and can an agent connect to it?
Not an official one. The drive found only third-party MCP servers for Element. A new agent can't get in on its own: in the drive of 27 Oct 2026, our agent stopped at sign up (it needs a person).
