Tips for agent builders
- Self-host it: run the rocketchat-compose images and set ADMIN_USERNAME, ADMIN_PASS, ADMIN_EMAIL, ADMIN_NAME and OVERWRITE_SETTING_Show_Setup_Wizard=completed, so no browser is needed to get an admin.
- Pin RELEASE to the current LTS (8.9.0) instead of the compose default 8.0.1.
- Authenticate with X-User-Id plus X-Auth-Token from POST /api/v1/users.generatePersonalAccessToken; never call users.logout on your own id, it removes your PATs too.
- For livechat without a browser session, set Livechat_accept_chats_with_no_agents to true, or rooms fail with no-agent-online.
- Upload files with POST /api/v1/rooms.media/{rid} then rooms.mediaConfirm/{rid}/{fileId} (the older rooms.upload answers 404 on 8.9).
- Read 429 X-RateLimit-* headers: the default is 10 calls per endpoint per 60 seconds, with no Retry-After.
- Marketplace apps need the workspace registered: paste the Cloud portal's registration token into POST /api/v1/cloud.connectWorkspace.
- Auto-translate without a cloud key: run LibreTranslate, set AutoTranslate_ServiceProvider to 'libre-translate' and AutoTranslate_LibreTranslateAPIURL, and give role user the auto-translate permission; a room translates only for its other members, never the sender.
- Deploy Apps-Engine apps without a browser with 'rc-apps deploy --url <server> -i <userId> -t <PAT>'; on Starter the app installs but stays disabled (license-prevented).

Questions people ask about Rocket.Chat
- Can an AI agent sign up for Rocket.Chat on its own?
- Our agent got into Rocket.Chat without signing up. Its way in: Runs locally, no account, in 4 min. No account needed on the documented self-managed route: the admin user is created from the ADMIN_* environment variables at first start. The hosted Cloud sign-up (cloud.rocket.chat/register) was done in the browser by the agent, but no hosted workspace followed.
- Does Rocket.Chat have an MCP server, and can an agent connect to it?
- Yes. Rocket.Chat has an official MCP server. The server lists 131 tools. A new agent can't get in on its own: in the drive of 27 Oct 2026, our agent stopped at key (it was blocked). Through the MCP server, 0 of our agent's 3 attempts worked.
- How does an AI agent get a Rocket.Chat API key?
- In the drive of 27 Oct 2026, our agent was blocked at this step and got no key. No hosted workspace: 'Change to SaaS trial' answered 'Trial creation temporarily disabled. Please try again later.'; the other hosted route is a sales-led guided evaluation. The Cloud portal has no API keys.
- Can an AI agent delete its Rocket.Chat account?
- Yes, in a browser, without a human. Cloud account: cloud.rocket.chat/security > Delete account > Yes, continue > Delete account and data; the same email and password then got 'Email and password do not match'. The self-managed instance and data were removed and its port refused connections. Web UI only for the Cloud account, as docs.rocket.chat/docs/security.md describes.
- Can an AI agent pay for Rocket.Chat?
- Partly. Reaches the checkout: stopped at the $4896 a year charge.
